This morning, while waiting for my daughter at her orthodontist appointment, something unexpected caught my attention. Outside, just across from where I am seated, I noticed a small bird repeatedly flying into the window — it looks like it’s hitting it over and over again.
At first, I was confused. What was it seeing in the window?
Then it dawned on me:
The bird was trying to fight the window. It thought it was fighting another bird. It kept throwing itself at the glass, not realising that the “other bird” wasn’t real at all, it was just its own reflection.
From its perspective, it was defending itself from another bird, a threat that didn’t actually exist. But the more it fought, the more it hurt itself.
Then I thought to myself, If only I can make the bird see.
And in that quiet moment inside a dental clinic, I felt God whisper to my heart:
“That little bird is you. You keep hitting the same window over and over again, not realising you’re hurting yourself.”
These past few days, I’ve been asking God to open my eyes — to heal my blindness so I can finally see what is truly life, and what is not.
And He answered.
Watching that little bird made me realise something deeper. It wasn’t just just fighting a battle that wasn’t real, it was also exhausting itself chasing something that didn’t actually matter. And I saw myself in that. How often do I spend my days caught up in worries that exist only in my head, or chasing after things that will never give real peace or real life? How many times have I run after things that shine like life but are actually empty reflections – approval, perfection, control, success, comparison or fear?
Why do we throw ourselves toward the things that only leave us tired, anxious and wounded? And the whole time, God is gently trying to tell us: “My child, you don’t need to fight this. You don’t need to chase that. Look up. Look at Me. I will show you what life is truly, and what is not.”
